Bioactive polymer scaffolds for cartilage tissue regeneration

Background: The limited regenerative capacity of cartilage has encouraged the development of tissue-engineering approaches using biomaterial scaffolds. This study evaluated a bioactive polymer scaffold for cartilage regeneration.Methods: Chondrocytes were cultured on bioactive scaffolds, and cell viability, adhesion, extracellular matrix formation, and cartilage-specific marker expression were assessed.Results: The bioactive scaffold demonstrated good cellular compatibility and promoted extracellular matrix production. Increased expression of collagen type II and aggrecan was observed compared with the control material.Conclusion: Bioactive polymer scaffolds may provide a suitable platform for supporting cartilage tissue regeneration.
